چکیده

This study adds to the scientific literature dealing with climate change mitigation implications of wood substitution. Its main contribution rests modelling approach. By fully integrating forest resource and wood-product markets in quantitative scenario analysis, we account for international trade products as well impacts on EU forests forest-based sector employment an increased uptake wood-based construction and/or biochemicals biofuels. Our results confirm crucial role sawmilling industry bioeconomy. Thus, boosting would be most effective increasing production employment—in logging solid wood-products manufacturing, but also sectors using byproducts feedstock. Vertical integration biorefineries should thus advantageous. The positive climate-change effects carbon storage harvested (HWP) material substitution from are more than offset by reduced net sinks 2030, due harvests. Further, imports, resulting lower consumption sawnwood outside EU, reduce extra-EU long-life HWP GHG-intensive materials, highlighting need concerted mitigation.

An Integrated Modelling Framework for the Forest-based Bioeconomy

This paper describes the conceptual design of a regional modelling framework to assess scenarios for the forest-based bioeconomy. The framework consists of a core set of tools: a partial equilibrium model for the forest sector, a forestry dynamics model for forest growth and harvest and a wood resources balance sheet. The framework can be expanded to include an energy model, a land use model an...

Examining the potential impacts of climate change on international security: EU-Africa partnership on climate change

ABSTRACT Climate Change like many global problems nowadays is recognized as a threat to the international security and cooperation. In theoretical terms, it is being securitized and included in the traditional security studies. Climate change and its accompanying environmental degradation are perceived to be a threat that can have incalculable consequences on the international community. The co...

Impacts of Climate Change on the Global Forest Sector

The path and magnitude of future anthropogenic emissions of carbon dioxide will likely influence changes in climate that may impact the global forest sector. These responses in the global forest sector may have implications for international efforts to stabilize the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide. This study takes a step toward including the role of global forest sector in integrat...

Climate Change Impacts on Forest Growth and Mortality

In 2016, 197 nations signed the Paris Agreement and committed to limiting global temperature rise well below 2 o C [1], thus making understanding the potential for forests to mitigate climate change more important than ever. It is clear that by implementing region-specific mitigation strategies the forest sector can contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions [2]. However, while for...

Climate change and impacts of boreal forest insects

The circum-polar boreal forest has played an important role in the wealth of northern nations since the 15th century. Its natural resources spurred strategic geopolitical developments beginning in the 16th century but intense development of the boreal forest is largely limited to the 20th century. Insects cause considerable loss of wood that has an adverse effect on the balance of carbon seques...
